An art gallery description featuring artist Kelsey, a self-taught oil painter and former seafarer, working on a painting of a whale. The text discusses her background, inspiration, and artistic philosophy, including her focus on subconscious dreams and surrealist landscapes. A photograph of Kelsey smiling on a ship's deck with ocean views and her art studio equipment visible is included.

So, you made it through the art blabber above? I applaud you. All of the galleries, exhibitions, competitions, online art pages, blogs, and ‘how to succeed as an artist’ BS says you’re supposed to have this “artist statement”. Something that describes your inspiration and the ‘purpose’ behind your art. So there it is.

The truth? I just like painting weird sh*t (usually) in space.

“But Kelsey, where does your inspiration come from?” asks my adoring fan.

Honestly? Sure, sometimes it comes from dreams or meditations. Other times I get it from heavy metal music, or the epic photos my incredibly talented friends post online. Sometimes it’s a personal interaction with some sort of wildlife or astrophotography from giant telescopes. Sometimes nothing. A glimmer, a flicker, a barely recognisable moment in time and BAM! Inspiration sets in.

“But WHY do you paint it, Kelsey? Tell us why!” insists my other, rather pushy fan.

Why? Because I have to. Because I need to. Not to please anyone or change anyone, or to alter your perspective. If those things happen then that is a wonderful bonus. The real reason I create this art is because once an image has seeded itself inside my brain the only way I can escape from it’s incessant throbbing behind my eyes is to release it in paint onto the canvas and make it real.

So there you have it. It isn’t gallery spec but it’s the truth if you ventured this far to read all that! And if you did, thanks! You know me a little better now and I hope you can enjoy my art just the same.

Sincerely,

Kelsey Hottman
